Bump's World

Bump's World - November 2015

William Barton and his family were long time members of the Eastern Yacht Club in Marblehead, Massachusetts. William was the President of Parker Brothers, a company in Salem famous for many great games. The one Bill took the post pride in is Monopoly. Bill loved sailing and when he passed away, his family donated a perpetual trophy for the best overall performance of any yacht for the season.

As part of my yacht selling that is very challenging and very exciting, is getting to race in many different areas on many different boats. Last week, for example, I raced a Dehler 29 on Lake Champlain on Wednesday, a Sabre 426 in Martha’s Vineyard on Friday, a Dehler 38 in Manchester, MA on Saturday, and a J 111 in Marblehead on Sunday.

I just finished my 35th New England Boat Show. This one will go down as the snow show. There was several big storms right before the show. Boston was designated a disaster area and the Governor encouraged people to stay in their homes. I moved our Dehler 46 out of Manchester Marine fearing I would not be able to get out the drive way. It seemed to snow every day. I shoveled the boats off time and time again because we are not allowed to have snow on the boats going into the show.

It was June, 1978. The occasion? Marblehead, EYC Lambert Ocean Race. I'm headed to the starting line off of Marblehead. Me, my yellow C&C 25 "Banana Split", my crew: Rick, Rob, and wife number one. The name of the boat should have been "Clueless".

This was my first ocean race. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing or where we were going. I was not even sure what we would do all night. I had never even sailed at night before, assuming we were going to sail all night.

Monday is my day off. I go to work, but I consider it my day off. I would reflect on the race over the weekend, and little Monday morning quarterbacking, but I tried not to think about crew. For a long time now I have been racing yachts that require a minimum of nine and as many as twelve crew members to race competitively. Getting crew, and more importantly getting good crew, is a huge challenge. You cannot do it all yourself, you need good crew.
