Bump's World

Bump's World - September 2014

I just finished the 2014 Newport Boat Show.Overall it was a good show. The people attending were upbeat, with little talk of a slow economy or state of the world. The weather was very good, not too hot or cold with only a little rain late Saturday afternoon.Attendance numbers were up about 5%.

Last fall I convinced my good friend Tom Drechsler to buy a new DEHLER 38. I had heard that a DEHLER 38 in Europe was doing very well on the race course. That boat "SPORTHOTEL” is owned and sailed by Karl Dehler, son of the founder of DEHLER Yachts, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year. She was second in Kiel Race Week which is one of Europe’s biggest events (similar to our Key West Race Week).

I just finished my 33rd New England Boat Show. The Boston Convention Center continues to be a perfect building for a boat show. Two thirds of this huge building is used for the show and based on the economic outlook for the marine industry there is hope, but no real plans to expand the show back to the full building. The convention people have announced plans to double the size of the convention complex in order to stay competitive with other cities in the convention world. Once again our tax dollars are at work. They want to more than double the 800 million they spent the first time. WOW.

After the Annapolis Boat Show the DEHLER 38 was nominated to compete in the Boat of the Year contests for Cruising World and Sailing World magazines. We had just taken on the line since HANSE Yachts had recently purchased DEHLER. We are all excited to see the new DEHLER 38 since she represents a higher level of performance than the HANSE combined with a very high standard of construction.

In the 1980's the typical options were hot & cold pressure water, spinnaker gear, roller furling headsail, loran C, and some fabric selections. In the 1990's those options were standard. The option list was now in mast furling, electric winches, electric toilets, refrigeration systems, bigger alternators, GPS chart plotters, ultra leather fabric, and more battery capacity. The 200's brought leisure boom furling systems, more battery capacity, TV systems, computer hook ups, radar integrated to chart plotter all at the helm, and bigger and better batteries.
