Bump's World

Bump's World - February 2017

The 2017 New England Boat Show started will a series of snow storms that made move in and set up a bit of a panic. It was snowing as we moved our boats in so they got really dirty. Then Thursday a major snow storm prevented us from even getting to the show. Somehow, Friday, we got it together and got the boats clean and the booth set up for opening on Saturday.

Key West 2017 will be remembered as the year of the great weather. I have done Key West 5 times now and the weather is always a huge improvement from January Marblehead weather, but this year was perfect. Every day had a low temperature of 74 with a high of 78. No rain at all. Mostly sunny to totally sunny skies every day. Winds were about 18 to 20 Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. Winds were slowly lessoning the rest of the week. Seas were pretty lumpy on the windy days usually about 3 feet. The water is warm about 72 degrees.

As we come to the end of 2016, the yachting industry continues to see a huge influence from the European builders. Over 90% of all sailboats over thirty feet are built by three builders. I am lucky to represent one of those builders. For the second year in a row, more European built boats are sold in the North American market than North American built boats. Even the 2 last bigger US builders, Catalina and Hunter are getting killed. I cannot believe they will last much longer.

Key West continues to be the premier sailing event in the United States. For years Premier Racing ran this regatta and in many ways it changed, for the better, the way the way regattas are run all across the country. Like many boating related activities, running regattas these days is very difficult. Sponsors are hard to get and participation is down. Luckily the Storm Trysail Club stepped up to bat and keeps this regatta going.

Since there have been 2 or more sailboats in the same body of water, there has been yacht racing. There are 2 types of yacht racing. One design, where every effort is made to make the boats as similar as possible. The other is an attempt to give a time correction allowing that one boat is X amount of time faster than the other.
