A lot has happened in the boat industry in the past year. The trend toward European built boats continues to increase. Over 65% off all sailboats sold in North America are built in Europe. The US dollar remains strong making pricing for those boats very good. France and Germany continue to support their boat industry.

ULDB stands for, ultra light displacement boat. The yacht designers use a formula of displacement in tons divided by the waterline line length x .01 cubed. This gives them a number to compare weight versus length on different boats.

From the beginning of time, people have ventured out into the water. They designed and built all kinds of boats. They very quickly realized that rowing or paddling was a lot of work. They held up what ever they could find, and the boats went with the wind. They developed sails, masts, rudders, keels and much more. Immediately they worked to go faster than anyone else they knew and racing began.

I just returned from the Hanse Group dealer meeting in Germany. Hanse is tied with Bavaria for the second largest boat builder in the world. Hanse is bigger in sail and Bavaria is bigger in power. At the meeting there was a big presentation on the state of boat building.

One of my friends and customers, Edward Smith, invited me to come sail with him on his Hanse 545 in the British Virgin Island of Tortola. I thought that could be fun before the busy sailing season begins in Marblehead. Edward then mentioned there might be a little race between his boat and Deni's Hanse 545, also a customer of mine.
