Bump's World - August 2019

I first worked for Baltic Yachts in the marine industry in 1979. The sweet spot for Baltic was the 39. The 39 was the perfect size for a family to cruise and do some racing. The 39 had a single enclosed aft cabin, which we called the owners stateroom, even though the owner almost always slept in the bow. It had hot & cold pressure water and a shower in the head. Gas stove and oven and built in ice box. It also had a full navigation station with a VHF, Loran C, and radio direction finder. By 1985 in the nav station had a Radar screen.

I have done the Crocker Cup about 8 times and I have won it 6 times including last year. This was also on 6 different boats. I really like pursuit races and the Crocker is a good example of a pursuit race. The race is very well attended with often over 60 boats.

I have been racing sailboats all my life. In the beginning as crew, I would see my skipper occasionally try to make his case before the race committee. Both times, when either he was protesting or was being protested, I saw a lot of emotion and not always the result he wanted.

I just completed my 39th Newport Boat Show. This show had very good weather, overcast on Thursday but no rain, and sunny warm days on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I have not seen the industry's inflated attendance numbers, but I would guess attendance was very good. I measure attendance by seeing if the docks start to sink. I also measure it by the line at the men's room. Last 2 years that measurement got thrown off because I found a little known bathroom next to the marina office. It is very new and clean. It is never busy. Please do not tell anyone about this.

A lot has happened in the boat industry in the past year. The trend toward European built boats continues to increase. Over 65% off all sailboats sold in North America are built in Europe. The US dollar remains strong making pricing for those boats very good. France and Germany continue to support their boat industry.
