How is the boating industry surviving the pandemic? For the most part pretty good.

Once again life has thrown a curve ball at us. The economy was doing really well, which of course was very good for yachts sales.

I just completed my 41st New England Boat Show. 9 very long days. I'm very happy to have lived thru this again. Attendance was very good, around 52 thousand, which is the second highest ever. Last year was the highest but only slightly higher. No bad weather days, only Valentines Day being a little slow. Hey honey lent's go to the boat show for Valentines day, honey why am I sleeping on the couch tonight???? Also not kids school vacation week, which would mean a few less brats.

The single most import part of a sailboat race is the start. There are many different starting techniques. Most have some logic to them. One of the more popular is the Vanderbuilt start. Vanderbuilt owned a few J Boats of the 1920s that were about 130 feet long. He sailed with a professional crew of about 30, mostly from Sweden. He defended the America""s cup several times. He was famous for sailing 5 minutes away from the starting line with ten minutes to the start. After 5 minutes he would turn around and sail back to the starting line expecting to arrive at the second the race started. At 130 feet and over 150,000 lbs, maneuvering was not easy. Hard to speed up or low down.

My brother, Rick, and I sealed the joints and painted her. We installed oar locks for auxiliary power. Named her "Bumpa"
