BARTON AND BURKE TROPHIES

William Barton and his family were long time members of the Eastern Yacht Club in Marblehead, Massachusetts. William was the President of Parker Brothers, a company in Salem famous for many great games. The one Bill took the post pride in is Monopoly. Bill loved sailing and when he passed away, his family donated a perpetual trophy for the best overall performance of any yacht for the season.

The Burke family also lived in Marblehead and belonged to the Eastern and Boston Yacht Clubs. When William Burke died, his family donated the Burke perpetual trophy for the best overall performance of all classes in the Boston Yacht Club Wednesday night series. This series has the most entries of any series in Marblehead.

Tom Drechsler and I have sailed together for a long time. Tom bought a Dehler 38 "Remain Silent”. I sold "AFRICA”, the Tayler 45, I and knew it would be fun sailing with Tom on his Dehler 38.

The first Wednesday night race we had a good breeze and we won with a good lead. The Dehler 38 always seemed to go really well in a breeze. The jury was still out on light air performance. After you win a Wednesday night race, the committee gives you an additional 36 second per mile penalty for the next week’s race. The additional penalty goes to 18 seconds per mile the week after and then back to your normal rating. If you want to win the series you are much better off coming in 2nd and not getting the additional penalty. The average race is about 6 miles so the additional time is about 3 minutes and 36 seconds . At 6 knots of boat speed that’s a 1/3 of a mile in distance.

There is a spring, summer, and fall series Wednesday Nights with a total of 19 races. The cub scores first in each race, first in each series, first overall for your class and first overall of all classes. First overall of all classes is the Burke Trophy.

Our first day race was the Eastern Yacht Club Annual Regatta. It was shaping up to be a light air race. This regatta is the Eastern’s biggest race of the year and is very well attended.

We got a good start and worked our way up wind. I always keep my eye open for the sea breeze and it was struggling to fill in. We got around the weather mark in 2nd place and put up our Asymetrical spinnaker. We passed the lead boat and went on to win by a lot. We were now felling very good about our light air performance.

The Eastern also runs a Friday night race and the breeze was about 12ish. It is a pursuit style race so you get a start time and who ever finishes first wins. It was an exciting race and we passed the second place boat right before the finish to win.

We finished 2nd in the Crocker Cup with 60 boats racing. We won our class in the One Regatta. This is a 3 day race consisting of 8 races. 6 mile races, with windward leeward courses. We won 4 of the races and were first in class.

We end the year with a great record. The Dehler 38 performed incredibly well in all wind and sea conditions. We also had a great crew. Everyone did their job and everyone got along. It was always a pleasure to be racing "Remain Silent”.

Tom was a lawyer and that was his first and most important advise. We were more than excited to be awarded both the Barton and Burke Trophies. This is a fantastic honor and could not have ended the season on a better note.
